Field Trip of iRALL 2017 in Beichuan Research Base

        On the morning of October 18, teachers and students in iRALL School 2017 came to Beichuan research base for a ten-day field investigation, led by Mauri McSaveney, Theo van Asch, Hans-Balder Havenith , and Prof. Hu Wei.

 

        On the afternoon, this group arrived at the old Beichuan town, which is the worst affected area by Wenchuan Earthquake. The beautiful town was ruined in a second. Standing in front of the ruined site, Prof. Hu explained the geological structure in Beichuan area, and described the miserable scene after the catastrophic quake. Then Hu led students to observe the dislocation zone with a drop of 11 meters. Through Hu's explaination, these students learned more about the genetic mechanism of Wenchuan Earthquake, and the effects on local people caused by its secondary disasters.

        On the morning of October 19, in the meeting room of Beichuan research base, Prof. Stephen Evans, from University of Waterloo, Canada, Prof. Mauri McSaveney, from GNS, New Zealand, and Prof. HANS–Balder Havenith, from University of Liege, Belgium, gave lectures to students successively.

 

        At first, Prof. Stephen, who mainly studies catastrophic landslides, catastrophic processes in glacial environments, earthquakes, and remote sensing, introduced some cases of landslides, including their causes,trigger mechanism and damages. Then, Prof. Mauri introduced the Jiwei mountain landslide in 2009, involving its creep, genetic mechanism and development. Mauri is an international famous expert in engineering geomorphology and a pioneer in large landslide research, who has rich experience in earthquake impact, engineering geomorphology, erosion process, geomorphic hazard, risk assessment & mapping, etc.. At last, Prof. Hans introduced different types of landslides triggered by earthquakes, including related mechanical mechanisms and causes.

        On the afternoon, some UAV knowledge were explained by our technicians. And these students had an opportunity to start UAVs. Then, came the lectures given by Prof. Niek Rengers and Prof. Cees van Westen.

 

        Prof. Niek Rengers taught students how to write academic papers and academic reports, including some key points and “the golden rule”. Prof. Cees mainly studies the landslide risk assessment and remote sensing. In this class, he introduced field data collection, landslide mapping and cascading effects of large landslide. Cees also explained how to estimate landslide volume by multi time DEM analysis and by empirical model.
